SPEAKER_05

It's perfect with the Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center. It's gonna pull up. Thank you for your service on the list. I'm waiting to go with next number.

SPEAKER_02

That's it. We get one line. We got a couple more. I'm feeling motivational today. I was gonna say highly motivated Air Force. Thank you for my shirt. Yeah, man. Explain to everybody the shirt you gave me, which I'll be wearing on Friday when we uh stop live.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so we got uh branches of service for all the shirts. Uh over at the cafe, they got the cafe logo on the back, veteran on the sleeve. Uh they're pretty neat and they've uh they've been going like hotcakes. We had a big event over at McGoo's last weekend at their bar Olympics. Um they helped raise a bunch of money with us. That was awesome. Was it really our favorite Bar Olympic champion show up?

SPEAKER_03

Uh our cornhole champion.

SPEAKER_04

Our little stubby guy? No, he did not make an appearance. It was sad. We were hoping he was. We were hoping he was gonna break out and fly up, fly down here and uh make his appearance, but he did not. Uh they had 33 teams, um, and they started we got there at 9 a.m. I think they finished up around like 11 at night. Um it goes all day. Uh our guys won a couple games. They're gonna have to practice a little bit, but uh they represented well. They had a great time. Uh, and there were some other veterans in the crowd too, so they were all coming out. I believe uh a veteran actually won the whole tournament uh in the raine.

SPEAKER_08

Very cool.

SPEAKER_04

Uh so that was cool to see. But uh it was a good event. We'll definitely uh try and stay involved with them and uh do some more things because that was a really cool event and uh we got to see a lot of people. It was packed.

SPEAKER_03

All right. I saw you posted about our our um event live broadcast coming up on Friday.

SPEAKER_04

So the Orange Heart Medal ceremony is this Friday, um 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. be live. Guessing we'll probably do most of the ceremony stuff around nine-ish, I'm guessing. Or well, we kind of do it throughout the show. Yeah, though.

SPEAKER_03

And we do them individually.

SPEAKER_04

So that'll be cool to have their own time there.

SPEAKER_03

So explain to everyone what the Orange Heart Metal Foundation is all about. And you introduced us to it through Bobby Tiner. We had her on had him on the show a couple of times. Um, he has since passed away, unfortunately, through complications actually from Agent Orange. He's a uh Vietnam veteran, and uh he was just always in the trenches uh fighting for his fellow veterans, especially from the Vietnam War. And he picked up this um this mission of getting an Orange Heart medal to everyone who deserved them, uh deserves it, either that are, you know, you know, a a veteran in the area, or you can apply online and go through that process or show up on Wednesdays at uh the Veterans Cafe and and Museum. And we're actually doing these on Friday as well, so you can do it there too. But also if you're someone who has a loved one who has passed on, who served in the Vietnam War, you can get this in their name.

SPEAKER_04

Absolutely. It's really neat. Um, it's way overdue. Bobby's been pushing for it. He was working with Ken, uh Robin, and that whole group. They are fantastic folks. Uh, if you would like to come, it's at the cafe on Wednesdays, about uh 8 30, 9 o'clock in the morning, and a whole group of them shows up and they have breakfast every week. Uh, and and just staying involved with each other and events going on. But this medal was huge and it it identifies for folks that uh that they've been seen, that they've been heard. Um and Bobby was able to help get this passed in a lot of states where it's actually recognized now to pass these medals out. So we we have the uh applications as well. You can get them at the cafe, you can get them online at the Orange Heart Medal. Uh I believe it's OrangeheartMetal.com. Um just search up the Orange Heart Medal and you'll be able to find that thing. If your loved ones passed away already, they they give the medal as well out to the family. So I believe we'll have a few of those this Friday um of some spouses that will be there actually collecting the medal for uh their loved ones. So that'll be really nice to see it's uh an emotional event.

SPEAKER_03

Um But a lot of the guys are just thankful that uh to be recognized for their service and we learn a lot, we pass on a lot of information and we learn what people have been going through with Agent Orange and still going through and their children and their grandchildren. Now we're hearing about you know their great grandchildren could be impacted by this. So it's kind of like getting it on the map, getting it part of the conversation. Uh and also um, you know, we just learned that this is the group of veterans that there's still a large number of them in our midst.

SPEAKER_04

A whole bunch.

SPEAKER_03

And they were the ones that really took the brunt of this anti-war sentiment, um, even though they were the ones that were laying their lives on the line, doing what their, you know, their government told them to do. And so if we can the one thing that everybody uh always says is welcome home, and that was the whole basis to your organization.

SPEAKER_04

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_03

So it's kind of like the reason why this all is what it is.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and it just being over there and uh the stories with these guys that open up and come out, they'll they'll be at the cafe and we'll do some of these, and they're like, I've never told anybody that story. And you're like, I don't I don't know how to to correlate with that because I came back, everybody's pro-military um in the areas I've been in. But I couldn't imagine coming home and everybody mad at you and throwing stuff at you and calling you names. Most of these guys didn't a lot of them never talked about even being in the service. Um and now you see m military plates all over, folks with veterans' hats on, um, and that's that's how it should be. It's how it should have always been. But um we're gonna do our part.

SPEAKER_03

This is our April Conway Ford Talk Llama Lodge event. Um, and we also wanted to let you know that the first 50 veterans will uh enjoy breakfast on First Choice Plumbing Services, which is really cool. Um so we appreciate them for jumping on uh with us in and serving veterans um this Friday. So you can um find it on all the information on talkradio mb.com or vwhrc.org. You can find out more information about the Orange Heart Medal and about our our event also on our Facebook pages too. But you have some other types of um uh events going on.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, uh so Thursday, tomorrow we'll have the CCU football team coming over to the cafe. Uh that should be a really cool site. Um, we're excited to do that. Uh got to meet a uh coach over there at one of the last events with the uh North Myrtle Beach Women's Club. Uh so that'll be really neat. Uh we'll get our veterans over there from both of our facilities and they'll get to come over and uh meet the football team. And then Saturday we've got the pickleball tournament up in Bridgewater up in Little River. Uh and they'll be raising funds for VWHRC. Uh so if you want to come watch some pickleball, uh they'll be out there showing off and uh smacking some some pickleballs around. And then we got the big uh parade coming up next month. I think that's in about two or three weeks now. So uh we'll have talk 94-5 there in the in the the deuce and a half, and yeah, we'll throw out some candy at the kids.

SPEAKER_03

Um which um to the kids?

SPEAKER_04

At the kids, Liz. I thought I'd have the kids. I throw candy at the kids. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's good for them. It is good for if you can't dodge a room.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, exactly.

SPEAKER_03

You can dodge a ball. Is this on the 23rd of May?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's a Saturday.

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

All right.

SPEAKER_04

And we have to be there I think it's about nine o'clock.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. So I have to put this in my calendar here.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

All right. And we'll be um participating in that. And I think uh Nick, we have some what we're gonna throw some t-shirts from the deuce and have?

SPEAKER_02

We're gonna throw everything we had at everybody we see. Target practice. Yes. Okay, good. Because we need to order new ones with a new a new discount.

SPEAKER_03

We need a reason. Yeah. We need a reason, of course. All right, good. So we'll we'll meet you there and do that. I'm putting it in my calendar right now so we don't forget. Um, all right. So what else is happening? Anything else we need to know?

SPEAKER_04

Uh we're working on this resource center. Uh, if there's anybody out there that's a commercial contractor and would like to put a bid in um to do this resource center, we're looking at a 30 by 70 building there at the tiny homes. Um, possible steel building, possible stick built. Um, whatever you think you can get past and and put in place at uh a good cost. We don't need it for free. Um we'll we just want a very nice building for our folks to be able to all congregate, have our classes. Um spoke with uh a bank uh at our last event with uh Jason, Ray Welsh, and Cassie Page band. Uh that was a really good event. We had uh 137 folks showed up. Wow. Uh it was good.

SPEAKER_03

The church fundraiser at all?

SPEAKER_04

Kinda more just kind of hang out, show up, see the tiny home property.

SPEAKER_03

What were people saying?

SPEAKER_04

Uh I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Were they getting tours or we did have some tours.

SPEAKER_04

There were folks that never seen it. Uh they got to walk through, got some got a lot of contacts with folks that do things um and help out. The the guitarist for Cassie Page was Army Special Forces, so that was cool. Um, and then Jason over there with his band, and uh, we were able to help him out over this last week um with getting a new van for his band, so it was for him, so we were able to help him out. He was kind of renting U-holes to get to each of them. Oh wow. And I was like, dude, that's gotta that doesn't even make sense. I was like, we'll just help you out. You make some payments too, some donations. We'll we'll get you a nice van that way you guys can can get around. And I mean, that's you could possibly lose a job or a gig if you're not able to get there because of a rental van. So um we wanted to make sure he was taken care of. We've been helping him and he's been helping us for a long time. So that was really nice. Um, but that event was great. The the church showed up, they did fried chicken, burgers, hot dogs, uh, all the sides, desserts, um, and they donated all of it.

SPEAKER_03

It's cool to see all that life come in. It was really neat, though.

SPEAKER_04

I was like, I don't know how this event's gonna go. We just kind of threw it together. Fathom Realty was great, and they they made sure everything was awesome. The bands all had a good time. Um, the veterans came out the houses and and pulled up a chair and they watched the the concert. So I was like, Y'all ever had a concert in your backyard? And they were like, No. I was like, Me neither, but this is pretty cool. We'll have to keep doing this.

SPEAKER_03

We're speaking with uh Scott Dilabon, the uh executive director of V VWHRC, that is the Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center. Um, so you still have the thrift shop.

SPEAKER_04

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

What do you what do people need to know? Any updates on that? Uh just are you still accepting items?

SPEAKER_04

We do. Um we accept items, just ask that you call. Uh personal care items are always the the best donation for us with deodorant um paper towels, toilet paper, uh socks, underwear, stuff like that is the main thing they go through the fastest. Um, and then just little knick-knack items. They love coming up um doing their shopping day, and they'll get a bag and they're able to get little decorations for their tiny homes or for the for the room they're in um and take them back. But uh any of the little knick-knack items, the coffee pots are always good. Um, toasters, can openers. Wow. Um stuff you don't always really think about because you're like, I'll just go snag that, but they don't have that uh ability to just go snag that. Um the biggest thing we're trying to get right now are fuel cards and uh grocery cards for any of the veterans that come in. Um so they can go over. If they might not be able to pay for gas this week to get to work, um we'll just take them over and fill up their tank. But if we've got the gas cards there, we're able to to give them a gas card to get back and forth from work or taking the kids, whatever it may be, or just struggling because something happened. Um and we're kind of expecting that here again this month. It's a longer month with the five weeks again, so uh we're expecting probably next week to start getting a bunch of calls again to try and help out with some folks. But it's been busy up there. Tom's doing a whole bunch of claims. Uh I think he's had about seven or eight so far this week with with folks coming up uh to try and get claims in.

SPEAKER_02

So how's that menu looking? Just to ask on the food side of things. Because I took my mom and my daughter in there and we had a great breakfast, and I thought I saw some new stuff on there. You want to share anything?

SPEAKER_04

We did the uh the French toast uh breakfast sandwich, it's really good. Uh some people get a little worried about their hands getting sticky, but there's no no syrup on the outside of it. Uh and you can dip that sandwich in your syrup uh just like a little snack. So it's fantastic. And uh the chicken parmesan sandwich, which is f a really good sandwich, uh highly recommend that sandwich if you get over there. And you can't go wrong with a double cheesesteak, so uh that it's making me hungry. I know. I'm starving.

SPEAKER_02

I have to tell you, every time I I go to look to see if you're there, it's like, is he holding a bag? Nope, he's not. No bag. I'm sorry. That's just me. You know.

SPEAKER_03

He's like Pavlov's. I am Pavlov's. I am. He sees Scott on the Right.

SPEAKER_02

My stomach starts like, I'm gonna it's time to eat. I help me. You know, that's just me.

SPEAKER_04

I got you.

SPEAKER_03

In other words, he's disappointed.

SPEAKER_04

I know. I'm gonna have to get myself up a little earlier.

SPEAKER_02

No, not at all. Because guess what? Tomorrow, I'll get to have Aussie. Or not sorry, Friday, I'll get to have an awesome page.

SPEAKER_04

You can have a breakfast buffet over there if you'd like. We'll hook you up. And the breakfast pizza, the breakfast pizza is awesome. Oh, really? Flatbread and the sausage gravy on there for the sauce. Yeah, keep going. And then more sausage and more bacon and more cheese all over the top. Did you say sausage and bacon? Yes. Uh I'm in. I I'm in most of the time. It's so big I can't I can't finish the thing, but I accept that challenge. Let's see it. All right.

SPEAKER_03

All right. Anything else? Any stand downs coming up that you want to see?

SPEAKER_04

The next one is June 19th. That'll be over at the Tiny Homes again. Um other than that, we're doing great. We got 31 veterans with us right now. Um so the office is busy, the folks are busy. Uh, the case manager's doing an awesome job uh keeping these folks on track and and moving forward because that is the name of the game. Get back on your feet, get into your temporary housing, and then let's get you into your permanent house where you can buy a home. Uh, and then I gotta give a shout out to Rich for doing all the landscaping. Uh, he's been incredible with all the properties and uh can't thank him enough. And he jumps in anywhere we ask him to.

SPEAKER_03

Speaking of landscaping, we have an event coming up.

SPEAKER_04

Uh-oh. We do, don't we?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and she's making me come dressed as a llama. Yes, we do.

SPEAKER_03

No, that's our anniversary. Are you really?

SPEAKER_02

You have a llama costume? I'm confused. Apparently.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my gosh. Now, If y'all miss that one, it's your own. A tiny home planting party is going to be Friday meeting.

SPEAKER_02

Like a sexy hot llama. And I look like a doofus that belongs on a short bus llama. It's just you, baby. It's just you. True. You know?

SPEAKER_03

So um, this is we're gonna we're gonna be doing our June llama lodge in May because May is such a long month. So we did Friday, May 29th, 6 to 10 a.m. That'll be at the tiny home planting party at the village, uh, sponsored by, of course, Conway Ford, but beach landscaping as well. Beach landscaping is going to uh put it all together. We got a lot of volunteers already.

SPEAKER_04

That's good.

SPEAKER_03

We have the Civil Air Patrol, we have um the Republican ladies, they're gonna come back.

SPEAKER_04

What's that date?

SPEAKER_03

May 29th. It's the last Friday of May.

SPEAKER_04

Well, then I'll hold off. We were looking at um, we got about half the mulch in on the property about a couple weeks ago. I'll hold off on all of that and then I'll just have all that there for everybody if we got a bunch of volunteers.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and you're supposed to coordinate with Matt from Beach Landscaping.

SPEAKER_04

So we're gonna be putting some flag poles in and making a nice little uh entry there to the tiny homes with all the flags and all the branches. Yeah. Don't forget Space Force. We had to leave the Army.

SPEAKER_02

Don't what?

SPEAKER_03

Is Space Force included? You have to put Space Force.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah, you gotta put Space Force.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, I'm just checking because a lot of people forget that.

SPEAKER_02

I see this, I see Merlin.

SPEAKER_03

If you could do it again, Space Force. Would you look into that?

SPEAKER_04

Space Force? Yeah. I would do I think you gotta go through the Air Force to get it to the Space Force. That'd have been set up. Yeah, you would. Yes. It'd have been good.

SPEAKER_02

Do you know how many fires in space you could have put out?

SPEAKER_04

A lot. About the same amount that happened on Air Force One. I know.

SPEAKER_03

Do you have hopes that Max might do that?

SPEAKER_04

Uh Air Force, absolutely, yeah. Yeah? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe then go into uh I told all my kids they need to go.

SPEAKER_04

What's funny? Just go do your four years, get your get your do your service to your country, go get it done. I love it. You got school, you got medical. They take I mean it might not always be the best, but you look at other situations and some folks don't have any of that, and you're like, you at least have that to fall back on to. And if you really do need something and go over there, they're gonna make sure you're taken care of over at the VA.

SPEAKER_02

So Air Force is the only branch my family has not been in. Going back to my grandfather's that's sad. So I I know I was the first one for Air Force for mine. Okay. Well, I already told Nicolina because why don't you just do the Air Force first? You could teach school at the Air Force. I th I could probably do that, but what happens if I have to go to war, Daddy?

SPEAKER_04

You kick butt, lady. That's what you're doing. That's what I told her. That's what I told her. You kick butt. Yeah. That's what we do here in America. Yeah. We make sure this place is taken care of and all these damn crooks get out of here. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

All right, Scott Dilabon, go check him out at the Veterans Cafe and Museum on this Friday. You get to meet Scott. And if you are part of any type of veterans organization, we invite you to come on down so we can throw you on the air when we can to talk about We can't throw kids or candy at kids, but we can throw people on the air. Yes.

SPEAKER_04

I like it. We need one of those giant boards with the toad like the Target, and you used to throw people on them and the Velcro's.

SPEAKER_03

We remember those Velcro do those Velcro nightclub things? Yeah. I do remember that.

SPEAKER_02

We gotta do that. Yeah. With a radio microphone in the middle is the bullseye, gonna throw you on the air.

SPEAKER_03

We used to have like the you used to wear like the Velcro suit, and they used to put you on there and then spin the wheel.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, that is correct.

SPEAKER_03

You know what?

SPEAKER_02

You know who would be outstanding in that capacity? No. Our favorite cornhole super champion.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, that's right. He would be a good bowling ball to throw. That guy is talented.

SPEAKER_04

He is. He would he could probably do a flip after you tossed him.

SPEAKER_03

Nobody knows what we're talking about, but boy, was that funny.

SPEAKER_04

He would land backwards on the target.

SPEAKER_03

Probably.

SPEAKER_04

Upside down.

SPEAKER_03

All right. Thanks, Scott. We'll see you there.

SPEAKER_05

SPEAKER_03

I just want to let you know. Um, Lou Krieger reached out to me and I promised I would share this information about a veterans event that's coming up in Wilmington. And I know that sounds a little bit far, but there's some good news about it. Um Autry Benton is providing bus transportation to it. So it's at the National Guard Armory on Infantry Road in Wilmington, North Carolina, which from where we're standing is about an hour and 40 minutes. Uh, this is happening May 28th through the 30th. You have plenty of time for this, and it's a three-day event. The American Legion Department of North Carolina, in partnership with the Department of Veteran Affairs, is proudly sponsoring the 8th Annual Veterans Experience Action Center. And I just asked uh Scott Dulabon about it. All veterans and family members are welcome. In many cases, if you're having trouble getting your benefits, there's going to be on hand benefit specialists and healthcare staff on hand that can sometimes make immediate decisions. But you need to bring your DD Form 214 and any existing documentation pertaining to your case, including medical records relating to your disability, both military and civilian. And um it it's uh the way it happens is each day they're handling uh a Social Security account number ending in different numbers and digits. So you pick the one that matches your Social Security last two digits. And um, if you go on there and check it out, um you'll get more information about it. But I was reading from Lou that there is free bus transportation, and I will put that information in the post as well so that you have all the information you need in that one post. Please share this with all the veterans in your life. Um, go to our Facebook page and learn more. Thank you so much.
